CARRIER ACTION IN THE PHILIPPINES, MANILA BAY: PLANES FROM USS ESSEX MEET JAPANESE OVER MANILA BAY. TBF GUNNER RECEIVES DRAMATIC BURIAL DURING BATTLE.

Shot List: AV, aircraft carrier. MSs, planes take off from carrier. AV, Navy planes in formation. GSAP views, firing on Japanese planes and strafing ground installations. Navy planes landing on deck of aircraft carrier. Navy plane attempting to land on carrier, hits plane on deck, shears off wing of parked plane, and tumbles into ocean. MS, plane belly-lands on deck, lines keep plane from sliding into ocean. Deck crew helps pilot out of plane. Pilot is led from burning plane; crew puts out engine flames. At the same time, another fighter plane attempts to land, but veers off. (Camera does not follow through on action.) Seq: TBF Avenger light bomber lands on deck. Camera shows demolished tailgunner position. Cut to deck elevator with numerous folded wing planes and damaged plane among them. MCUs, men take fingerprints and cut dog tags from dead gunner in damaged plane. Plane with dead gunner is pushed overboard after services. Bugler sounds taps. Plane floating off fantail
