One of the largest Second World War operations, involving almost 4,000,000 troops on both sides and stretching on a 1400 kilometers long front. During this four-month operation, the eastern bank of the Dnieper was recovered from German forces by five of the Red Army’s Fronts, which conducted several river assault crossings to establish several bridgeheads on the western bank. Subsequently, Kiev was liberated in a separate offensive.
One of the costliest operations of the war, the casualties are estimated at being from 1,700,000 to 2,700,000 on both sides. The operation consisted of several smaller operational phases: Melitopol Offensive, Zaporozhye Offensive, Pyatikhatki Offensive, Znamenka Offensive and Dnepropetrovsk Offensive.

Just dnieper alone offensive, is larger than any battle, offensive or operation in mankind history, except ww2's Eastern front

Thank you for this clip. It's interesting. I think more needs to be explained about what Russian civilians had to endure under occupation.

It doesn't matter what Nation produced newsreel clips of front-line combat, every one is a mix of propaganda and actual footage, although the Soviets probably put in more of the former than any other nation. The Kremlin wasn't shy about staging re-enactments (for instance, closing the ring around Stalingrad), but I didn't see much of that here. On the other hand, it is impossible to say how much of the above footage was culled from other battles, maneuvers or demonstrations.
I am no historian or specialist ,but I would think that how fast and hard the germans hit them in the start of the war that they really wouldn't have time for propoganda war footage.
I have a question: is most red army footage of world war 2 propoganda or realistic frontline footage?
Great footage! I am thoroughly engrossed in my interest in The Great Patriotic war. If you find anymore footage like this it would be great if you posted it. I am also interested in any color footage and images of the terrain, either historical or current. I really have to take a tour of Russia, Ukraine and the Baltic States.
